3D Modeling
The site of the New York World's Fair, internationally famous
for its 1939-40 ''World of Tomorrow'' exhibit, is less well known for an
equally fascinating 1965 display of what may be the world's largest scale model
- 9,335 square feet depicting almost every building in New York City. This
mammoth model, containing 865,000 tiny structures built to a scale of 1 inch to
100 feet, has been updated for the first time in 16 years with 125 scale models
representing major projects that have gone up since 1974, such as Battery Park
City.
The Panorama of New York City, as the project is named, was
commissioned by the late Robert Moses at the World's Fair site in Flushing
Meadows, Queens. Now on permanent display at the Queens Museum, it draws more
than 100,000 visitors a year. Two picture captions on page 14 of The Long
Island Weekly today about plans for the former Roosevelt Raceway property are
reversed. The upper picture shows a scale model of the raceway project, and the
lower photograph shows plans for a mall and the renovation of a Fortunoff
store.
To celebrate the updating of the Panorama, many of its 50 major
corporate contributors - some of which have donated new models - will sponsor a
reception at 6 P.M. there on June 20. A public ceremony will be held at 1 P.M.
on June 23 to celebrate the Panorama's 25th anniversary. For further
